Test and Troubleshooting Trivia #1

May 1-31, 2008

Think you know all there is to know about testing? JDSU challenges you to match wits with this month's Testing trivia.

Each month, Cabling Installation & Maintenance will draw one lucky testing/troubleshooting expert at random from all the correct answers received, who will win a prize courtesy of JDSU. This month's prize is a $100 American Express Gift Card.

Winners' information each month will appear between a set of horizontal rules. Information will include name of winner and the company he/she is associated with. This space will also provide the winning answers for those interested to see if they were correct.

With the growth of VoIP and IP-data across enterprise networks, it is critical to determine the ability of the network to support Ethernet data transmission. Frequency-based certifiers test for TIA and ISO parameters such as NEXT and return loss-not for applications. The less-expensive application-based certifiers test IEEE parameters such as bit error rate to determine if any given cable run supports 10/100/1000 Mb Ethernet.

1. To certify cable runs for Ethernet applications, what is the relevant standard?
a. TIA 568-B
b. ISO 11801
c. IEEE 802.3

2. Which tests best certify Ethernet applications for the network?

a. Bit error rate or packet error rates
b. NEXT, PSNEXT, ELFEXT, PSELFEXT, attenuation, return loss, ACR

3. Which type of tester is required to confirm if the network will support Ethernet applications?

a. Frequency-based certifier
b. Application-based certifier

4. Application-based testers typically cost how much less than frequency-based certification testers?

a. the same
b. half as much
c. less than half as much
